Cup for to prevent babies to die from starvation

Shared by Ana Duarte on 2016-11-16 16:27

About the solution

Dr. Michael Cunningham, one of the inventors, had the idea for this innovation in 2007, when he was in Ghana training African surgeons.

Since he was shocked with all the babies with palates suffering from malnutrition because they couldn’t eat, he took action and created the NIFTY cup.

“I could not believe it,” the doctor explained. “I saw two babies die of starvation”.

The cup consists of a soft, silicone bowl with a tiny reservoir and spout that can help at helping premature infants and newborns and with conditions such as cleft palate, which is when the roof of the mouth contains an opening into the nose. These disorders can result in feeding problems, and other problems regarding speech, hearing, and ear infections.

Due to cleft palate, can’t generate suction and it is hard for them to use the regular bottles.

The NIFTY cup’s spout allows the mother to express breast milk directly into the bowl and then fit it to a baby’s mouth. This way, the newborn can control the feeding pace, doing the suction normally.

“The cup was designed for what babies do,” the expert clarified.

The team is making efforts to sell the cup by 1 USD a piece.

“It doesn’t take much to know something works. We know it works”, Michael assured.
