Grandfather invents device to help babies sleep

Shared by Ana Duarte on 2019-11-13 16:07

About the solution

As a father of twins, Frank had trouble putting his kids to sleep. Now, his kids have their own children and have the same problem. This led Frank to create a solution.

After a lot of research, the inventor realised that life outside the womb is not nearly as inviting, nor soothing, as life inside the womb. "I found that one of the major issues was that the baby was suffering because it could not hear the soothing sounds of the heartbeat and the white noise associated from being in the womb," he explained.

So Frank tried to find a way to replicate the sounds of the womb in a way that would provide comfort to a baby, in the hope that the familiar womb-like sounds would lull bub into a peaceful sleep. "In some countries, people had devised toys which produced sounds, but it was deemed that they were not safe because of possible strangulation. Likewise, ear plugs and earmuffs were out because of the danger of the cables," he expressed.

The result is Mothers Little Helper, a device that is put under the bassinet/cot sheet and on top of the mattress. It consists of an mp3 player, amplifier and controller that is programmed to play the sounds in the womb continuously unless turned off or the battery runs out.

"Instead of the womb being the quiet place scientists once assumed, it is actually awash in sounds, particularly the whooshing of blood and digestive system, the thumping of the mother's heart and the sound of the mother's voice, which sounds louder than it would be transmitted through the air since it reverberates through the bones and fluids in the mother's body," reports the Gladstone Observer.

Frank had had the help of sound engineer in London, in order to produce the right sounds.

The inventor launched a Kickstarter campaign to help him develop his product, to move from prototype to full manufacture.
