App to prevent overcrowding in bars and restaurants during the Covid-19 pandemic

About the solution

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, people had to follow certain health a safety measures to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus. Such measures include social distancing, which was especially challenging in enclosed spaces, such as restaurants and bars. To help solve this problem, Sweden developers Chris Mortimer and Stephen O’Callaghan launched BYEVID, a free app that helps to manage capacity inside these businesses and help people to safely return to their daily lives.

The apps shows a map of Stockholm showing all the open bars and restaurants. In the app, business owners can set the maximum capacity of the establishment, which can be altered whenever guidelines for social distancing change. Then, the current capacity of the venue is updated in real-time: whenever a customer enter the establishment, they are asked to check-in through sms or by scanning a QR-code at the entrance; then, the business owners update the numbers as costumers leave.

By showing information on the real-time occupation of the establishments, costumers can go through the app and choose which restaurants or bars are least crowded, avoiding the nuisance of having to wait outside for costumers to leave and a spot to open.

The app allows business to put in place a booking system of up to 7 days, so people can book in advance a time to visit the establishment. But they can also book a place immediately as it becomes available, to reserve the spot.

There is also a section where business can detail the specific safety measures they put in place during the pandemic and state the rules that costumers must follow inside the premises.

BYEVID was launched in beta version in Sweden but it was designed to be flexible and adjust to the Covid-19 guidelines followed by other countries.
